Among the eight kinds of activities of cultivation, Master Ji and others explain: "what is acquired through cultivation" is cultivation itself. "What is habituated through cultivation" is repeated cultivation. "If already acquired previously but not yet brought to the fore, merely by cultivating that kind of dharma, causing it to manifest in the present, causing it to become increasingly pure, radiant, and white in arising, it is called purified through cultivation": this means that at the time of the cognition of phenomena, the seed of its subsequent cognition is also accomplished, hence it is called "already acquired previously." Due to cultivating that seed of the cognition of phenomena, it aids the seed of subsequent cognition; when reaching subsequent cognition, this seed can generate subsequent cognition, causing it to become increasingly pure, radiant, and white in arising, which is called "purified through cultivation"—that is, at the time of the cognition of phenomena, cultivating the seed of subsequent cognition to make it pure, after which subsequent cognition is generated. Furthermore, it is like augmenting taintless seeds before the path of seeing to enter the path of seeing and generate the cognition of phenomena and so forth. Moreover, accomplishment of seeds is "acquired through cultivation"; maturity of active manifestation is called "habituated through cultivation"; accomplishment of mastery is called "purified through cultivation"—these are the three maturities. If afflictions have already arisen and can be eliminated and severed, it is called "dispelled through cultivation"; if afflictions not yet arisen can be prevented from arising by thoroughly understanding them as illnesses and so forth, it is called "known through cultivation."
