The treatise says: "What is neither restraint nor non-restraint? It refers to all bodily, vocal, and mental karma, wholesome, unwholesome, and so forth, with the exception of the aforementioned restraint and non-restraint." According to the previous restraint, one can obtain it even if one does not uphold all; this is based on the superior grade giving rise to non-manifest [karma]. If it is of medium or inferior grade, even if one does not presently practice the ten unwholesome courses of karma, or even if initiated by the medium or inferior grade of wholesome courses of karma, the non-manifest [karma] is entirely of this essential nature. Furthermore, if a single person takes a vow of restraint to uphold one part and upholds one, while not upholding the rest, that is intermediate; if one vows to perform one part of evil karma, it is not called non-restraint, but is merely intermediate. Now, restraint and non-restraint can also be based on one part; but because one vows to attain wholesome departure of the superior grade, it is subsumed under non-restraint, within which there are also three grades.
