Regarding “Karma experienced in the present life”, etc.: Both this text and the Abhidharma-samuccaya state there are three kinds, named from the first; the present refers solely to particular retribution, while the others apply to both overall and particular retribution. Earlier, two kinds were spoken of, namely determinate and indeterminate. Fascicle 60 speaks of four karmas: (1) determinate maturation; (2) determinate time; (3) both determinate; (4) both indeterminate. The Prakaraṇāryavācā, fascicle 19, speaks of five karmas: (1) determinate experience in the present life; (2) determinate experience in the next life; (3) determinate experience in subsequent lives; (4) determinate experience of retribution; (5) determinate performance of karma. Without relying on time, but discussing only retribution, there are only two kinds: determinate and indeterminate. If discussing time together with retribution, there are only three karmas, which does not exceed this. When time and retribution are correlated, combining and separating them yields four, because specific times are not mentioned, but only spoken of generally. Only when relying on time, fruit, and determinate performance of karma are five kinds stated, excluding the indeterminate. Although the texts differ, there is no contradiction in meaning, because their perspectives differ.
