In the second section there are eight [modes]. The Abhidharma-samuccaya says: 'Arising of consciousness' refers to eye-consciousness being able to arise with eye and form as conditions, and so forth. 'Maturation of external crops' refers to sprouts having seeds as conditions, stalks having sprouts as conditions, and so forth. 'Death and birth in the sentient world' refers to volitional formations being able to be generated with ignorance as condition, and so forth. 'Formation and disintegration of the receptacle world' refers to the arising of the great earth and so forth with the augmenting power of the common karma of all sentient beings as condition, and so forth. 'Sustenance by nutriment' refers to sentient beings of the three realms abiding in succession with the four nutriments as conditions. 'Experiencing pleasant and unpleasant fruits according to karma through the augmenting power of one's own generated karma' refers to going to good and bad destinies with good conduct and bad conduct as conditions. 'Sovereign power' refers to producing supreme merits such as supernormal knowledges with internal realization as condition. 'Purification' refers to successively attaining up to the fruit of arhatship with wholesome [roots] favorable to liberation as condition. The lower fascicle of the Pratītyasamutpāda-sūtra also explains these eight sections; however, its sequence differs from that in the Abhidharma-samuccaya. Therefore, later in the tenth fascicle, when explaining the twelve links, [it shows] how many of these sections subsume them. Here, occasion is taken from dependent origination to explain conditions in general; hence they are presented here, and will be expounded more broadly in the later fascicle.
