In establishing the hindrances, there are two parts: first, clarifying the characteristics of the hindrances; second, clarifying the nutriment of the hindrances. The characteristics of the hindrances have two parts: first, stating and listing them; second, explaining them individually.
In "the hindrance of torpor and sleepiness", first the characteristics are explained individually, and afterwards the reason for establishing them together as one hindrance. "Not guarding the sense faculties" and so forth is as explained in the "Śrāvakabhūmi".
"The mind is extremely dim and abbreviated" is as explained in the *Vijñaptimātratāsiddhi*.
In explaining the combined establishment of the hindrance, there are first two alternative explanations, and afterwards a conclusion establishing the sense of their mutually conforming arising.
In the hindrance of agitation and regret, first the two characteristics are explained individually, and afterwards the reason for establishing them together as one hindrance is explained. In the reasons, there are two alternative explanations: first, explaining that because both take relatives and so forth as their common object-support, they are combined into one hindrance; second, explaining that because their active aspects are similar, they are combined into one hindrance. In the previous individual explanation of the characteristics of regret, there are three times: first, when one was in secular life.
As for "for what reason did I go forth at a young age?" and so forth: the initial time of going forth.
As for "or due to recollecting what was previously experienced" and so forth: the time after going forth.
In the text explaining the similarity of their active aspects, there are also three passages.
