Fourth, explaining that freedom from various faults is called renunciation. In the [four] reliances, there are three parts: first, indicating that there are four kinds of reliances of renunciation; second, explaining the reasons for the aspects respectively; third, concluding with the gains and losses of the four kinds across the four times. The second section has two parts: first, indicating the establishment of the four kinds due to differences among four kinds of persons; afterward, explaining the aspects in detail. Regarding "Because of deceit, it is said that the Dharma is the reliance, not the individual (pudgala)," and so forth, there are deceitful persons who consider their teacher supreme; seeing their deportment and demeanor, they promptly rely on and learn from them. Now, it causes them to rely on the Dharma and not on the person: one must debate, distinguish, and analyze with them, and only then verify and know for oneself, rather than verifying and knowing merely by approaching the person.
