3. Revealing the essential nature. In the Vibhāṣā there are three masters, with four paired alternatives, all detailed as in that work. Within this bhūmi, it first concludes the preceding and introduces what follows to begin the treatise; later it relies upon questions and answers. Within the answers there are three parts: first, stating the verse; second, explaining the verse; third, extensive explanation. The final miscellaneous meanings enter into the fifth, the doctrinal essentials of the sūtras. Within those essentials, it explains the sūtras on various dharma characteristics such as the eight liberations listed below; those miscellaneous meanings also explain the scattered, miscellaneous meanings of the various sūtras. Because both explain sūtras, they form a single portal. In portals such as establishment, it only explains dhyāna, not liberation, samādhi, or samāpatti, because they are only explained below in the essentials. The extensive explanation has four parts: first, general heading; second, establishment; third, manaskāra and ālambana; fourth, explaining the sūtra. The third and fourth are explained together, so there are four sections. In the general heading there are two parts: first heading the four portals, and later explaining them individually.
