Within the characteristics of mastery, there are two [parts]: first, clarifying the mastery of the characteristics of wise attention and so forth; and last, from "because of such delight in abandoning and delight in cultivation" downward, concluding the characteristics of mastery in leaving defilement and advancing in goodness. Within the first, there are again three: first, stating that one immediately gives rise to wise attention; next, clarifying that based on the four stations, one gives rise to the twenty-two observations, up to forming the notions of a renunciant and a śramaṇa; and last, clarifying the characteristics of abandoning and cultivating through the six characteristics of cultivation. The six characteristics are: (1) delight in abandoning; (2) delight in cultivation; (3) absence of covetous clinging; (4) absence of malice and harmfulness; (5) absence of secondary afflictions (upakleśa), properly guarding the smṛtyupasthānas; (6) absence of excessive conceit (adhimāna).
