Regarding the lineage of the Stage of the Solitary Realizer, there are three types of persons, or one person possessing all three. Among one person possessing all three, they are spoken of according to the predominant nature, hence there are three types; or they are spoken of as three types according to three meanings in a single person. Within the path, there are three types: First, at the initial aspiration of the mind, having encountered a buddha and cultivated for a hundred kalpas, one attains the rhinoceros-horn fruit. Now the treatise separately explains that after passing a hundred kalpas, one encounters a buddha appearing in the world. Another interpretation: although cultivating within the hundred kalpas, one has not cultivated skillfulness in the aggregates and so forth; after passing a hundred kalpas, one encounters a buddha's era and only then cultivates skillfulness in the aggregates, attaining the rhinoceros-horn path in a subsequent body. In the second path, having previously encountered a buddha who taught the Dharma, one cultivates for less than a hundred kalpas—cultivating for ninety kalpas down to a single kalpa—and in the stages of warmth and so forth cultivates skillfulness in the aggregates and so forth; one cannot realize the first fruit in this life, or as a kulaṃkula, one of seven rebirths, a sakṛdāgāmin, or an ekavīcika, in a subsequent body one attains the fruit of a solitary realizer, and so forth. In the third path, having encountered a buddha and cultivated, in this body one attains the first fruit, or the fruit of seven rebirths, a kulaṃkula, an ekavīcika, a sakṛdāgāmin, and so forth, and further cultivates skillfulness in the aggregates and so forth, realizing the fruit of non-learning of a solitary realizer in a future life. As for practice, there are three types: First, the first is as the text states; the second employs the previous path, and because there are two, the practices are likewise two.
