Third is the consciousness that cognizes objects (viṣayavijñapti), which is the remaining six consciousnesses. The Viṃśikā states: "Citta, manas, vijñāna, and vijñapti are distinctions of name." "Cognizing" (vijñapti) is a general name for all consciousnesses; yet cognizing distinct objects and coarse, evident objects belongs only to the first six; and the six consciousnesses are posited with respect to these six sense-objects. However, this might be confused with the seventh. One should state: these six cognize coarse objects, so they are named the consciousnesses that cognize objects. Because their marks of cognition are coarse, they are distinguished from the seventh and eighth. "Cognizing objects is consciousness" is likewise identical to the preceding explanation.
