Regarding the eight doctrines of non-ideation: there are four of having form and so on, and four of finite and so on. The four of having form and so on: First, my self has form and has no ideation after death: grasping form as the self, one attains the concentration without ideation; seeing others attain the concentration and be born there, one constructs such a reckoning, and so on. Second, my self is formless and has no ideation after death: grasping the life-faculty as the self, one attains the concentration without ideation, and so on at length. Third, grasping that my self is both having form and formless, and has no ideation after death: grasping form and the life-faculty as the self, one gives rise to a single conception of self regarding these two, and so on at length. Fourth, grasping that my self is neither having form nor formless, and has no ideation after death: this simply negates the third, having no distinct entity. Meditative attainment and vitarka-vicāra can both give rise to them. The four of finite and so on: First, grasping that my self is finite and has no ideation after death: grasping form as the self, its measure is narrow and small, and so on; one attains the concentration without ideation, and so on at length. Second, grasping that my self is infinite and has no ideation after death: grasping form as the self, it pervades all places, and so on at length. Third, grasping that my self is both finite and infinite, and has no ideation after death: grasping form as the self, it either contracts or expands, and so on at length. Fourth, grasping that my self is neither finite nor infinite, and has no ideation after death: this negates the third statement. Meditative attainment and vitarka-vicāra can both give rise to them.
