The Commentary states: This cites the Sautrāntika masters' assertion; from here on, it is entirely the same as the Ālambanaparīkṣā. They say that atoms really exist, but are not the objects of the five consciousnesses, because there is no aspect of atoms upon the five consciousnesses; when numerous atoms subsumed under those respective locations combine together, they collectively form one thing termed 'the combination' (saṃghāta), like an aṇurajas and so on, which only then becomes the object of the five consciousnesses. The combination is nominal (prajñapti), established on the basis of real atoms; namely, because there is a combined aspect upon the five consciousnesses, they are said to resemble that aspect.
