The Commentary states: Below is the establishment by principle; the text is easy to understand. If the five vijñānas are interrupted, then before and after there would definitely be only mano-vijñāna. That third fascicle says that after the abrupt mind of the eye-consciousness there is definitely the searching mano-vijñāna, and after this there is sometimes distraction, or the arising of consciousnesses like the ear[-consciousness]; it does not allow the arising of the ear-consciousness after the eye-consciousness. Because it is said here that after the eye-consciousness there is only mano-vijñāna, and it does not say that the five vijñānas arise, then the fifty-second fascicle should say: if this one mano-vijñāna is the condition for those six vijñānas, up to those six vijñānas being the condition for that one mano-vijñāna, because before and after there is definitely only the mind.
