The Commentary states: Although it is focused and subtle, it is not the same as meditative absorption, for this is purely dark; thus 'darkness' distinguishes it from absorption. Other distracted minds, though having darkness, are not condensed, but are also heavy. 'Condensed' distinguishes it from the waking state, because the waking state is broad. Fascicle 11 of the Yogācārabhūmi also states: 'It takes darkness and condensation as its nature.' However, in common parlance it is said, 'You are asleep', even at times when one is mindless, calling that sleep as well. Alternatively, fearing that the Sautrāntikas might designate it nominally upon the aggregate as a whole or in parts, the word 'causes' is inserted. By stating that it has a substantial entity, it possesses functions such as causing the body and so forth to lack self-determination, thereby demonstrating that sleep is not devoid of substantial entity and function.
