Regarding the third part in refuting acquisition (prāpti), the direct refutation has two parts: first, refuting acquisition; second, refuting non-acquisition (aprāpti). The refutation of acquisition also has two parts: first, raising inquiries equally based on teaching and logic, which are the seven difficulties; second, granting a different meaning and inquiring, which is [the passage beginning with] 'furthermore, acquisition with regard to phenomena,' etc. In the first part there are four: first, citing scriptural teachings to present an equal difficulty; second, refuting the defense that mastery is termed possession; third, that it can be nominally said to exist based on the present; fourth, refuting their defense: 'If there is no acquisition, unrisen phenomena would never arise,' because wholesome seeds and the like must exist in the present. In the inquiry that grants a different meaning there are two parts: first, posing a determining question; second, refuting specifically. In the refutation there are two, as can be known from the text. In the initial refutation of what can give rise [to phenomena], there are three parts, as in the text.
