The treatise says: Just as the lights of many lamps each pervade everywhere and resemble a single appearance, yet are individually distinct. The second fascicle of the Abhidharma says: The visual consciousness at the two faculties is like two lamps jointly emitting a single light. How can this be reconciled? The former uses the provisional Hīnayāna Dharma as an example, while the latter is an example based on the essential meaning of Mahāyāna; thus there is no contradiction either. It is like sound having simultaneous causes, being produced jointly or separately. If so, just as when many lamps dwell together, their shadows differ, how can they jointly produce [one light]? The correct explanation now is: like multiple wicks in a single lamp saucer, or sound with simultaneous causes, the primary elements (mahābhūta) being adjacent jointly produce a single form; wicks in two separate saucers do not jointly produce form, and so their shadows differ.
