Being born in a lower plane, how many defilements of the formless realm can arise? Only six or seven arise, namely: view-attachment, conceit, doubt, attachment (rāga), delusion, and self-view. Whether in absorption or in rebirth, it does not exceed these. Furthermore, precept-attachment of that [realm] can also arise, because of clinging to that absorption as a supreme cause. There is no text mentioning the arising of wrong view or extreme view of that realm, unlike the form realm which has the sixty-two views and so forth. Being born in the desire realm and giving rise to the absorption of the form realm, among the five distractions—namely [views of] body, extremes, conceit, attachment, doubt, and the two attachments—no characteristic of giving rise to wrong view is seen. The two theories of causelessness are also the arising of that wrong view after absorption; all nine are capable of arising, along with the arising of precept-attachment, because of clinging to that absorption as a supreme cause. However, there is no such text stating that being born in the formless realm, aside from the lower self that moistens rebirth, craving, conceit, the two views, and delusion, the rest can never arise, because there is no intermediate existence there where one could be said to give rise to denigration and the like. Being born in the formless realm, only the lower innate [defilements] arise; there is no mark of arising conceptual discriminations, because there is no intermediate existence to give rise to denigration.
