In fascicle 57 of the Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra on the twenty-two faculties, it is asked: on the basis of which faculty locus did the World-Honoured One make this statement: "Travelling far and moving alone, bodiless, sleeping in a cave"? Answer: on the basis of the locus of the mental faculty. Because from beginningless time in the past it universally takes all cognisable objects as its domain, it is called 'travelling far'; because the moments of mind continue and turn one by one without an agent, it is called 'moving alone'; because it is non-material, invisible, and without resistance, it is called 'bodiless'; because it relies upon matter, it is called 'sleeping in a cave'. Fascicle 4 of the Mahāyānasaṃgraha says: "Because it wanders through all cognised objects, it is called 'travelling far'; to confirm this meaning, it further says 'moving alone', because there is no second; stating 'bodiless' is because it has no physical form; 'sleeping in a cave' is because it abides within; stating 'taming this' means gaining mastery over such a mind; 'the mind difficult to tame' is because its nature is stubborn and refractory."
