Question: Why do both stupor and sleep induce the absence of mind? Question: If there is an entity of tactile dust, is sleep not so? Sleep has the mental factor of sleep; does stupor then lack one? When there is stupor with mind, what is this stupor? It is because the tactile [condition] of stupor intensifies, inducing the state of stupor; unlike the mental factor of sleep which induces the arising of a distinct state, there is no mental factor of stupor. Why is sleep not a tactile dust? The mental factor capable of inducing it is itself the sleep factor, whereas the tactile [condition] capable of inducing stupor is just mental stupor; hence there is none. Alternatively, stupor is dullness lacking functional capacity. Or else stupor is merely designated nominally upon the five aggregates, like the stupor-factor of death and rebirth when born into the formless realm, which is just the six mental factors associated with the root consciousness.
