That one must abide in a distracted mind, and not in mindlessness or meditative absorption, is held in common by both the Mahāyāna and Hīnayāna. The Mahāmāyā Sūtra states: the Buddha entered nirodha-samāpatti and only then entered nirvāṇa; this agrees with the eightieth fascicle of the Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra. The text here may be divided into six parts: (1) refuting the Sautrāntikas. As in dreamless sleep, pravṛtti-vijñāna is absent, but other schools do not say so. Next, refuting the Sarvāstivādins and others. (3) Revealing true vipāka. The other three sections of text are clear in themselves.
