Regarding the pair of the six and seventh consciousnesses: first, as for the afflictive obstacle, such as for persons of the two vehicles: on the darśanamārga, the conceptually constructed defilements associated with the six [consciousnesses] are non-accomplished. The innate defilements pertain to both. Those of the seventh are accomplished; even if one attains a fruit, one does not sever the defilements of the seventh. On the bhāvanāmārga, among the eighty-one grades, there is accomplishment or non-accomplishment as appropriate. If the defilements of the seventh are accomplished, only when the eighty-one are severed is it called non-accomplished; while severing the preceding eighty, it is still called accomplished—this is stated in terms of the existence of the seed. If stated in terms of functional capacity, on the worldly path it is accomplished, and on the supramundane it is non-accomplished. If stated with respect to bodhisattvas, the conceptually constructed defilements of the six consciousnesses are non-accomplished on the darśanamārga. The innate ones are accomplished, because there is no leaping over fruits. On the bhāvanāmārga, the view of self (satkāyadṛṣṭi) and so forth of the sixth consciousness are permanently suppressed on the fourth stage (bhūmi), and are called non-accomplished; prior to that, they are called accomplished—this is stated in terms of functional capacity. If stated in terms of the seed, because the substance exists, it is called accomplished. The self-view of the seventh becomes non-accomplished at the vajropama ānantaryamārga; prior to that, it is called accomplished—this is stated in terms of the substance of the seed, not its function; if stated in terms of function, there is accomplishment and non-accomplishment, which is only briefly explained here.
