Second, regarding "the fault of active function not increasing": he says: "First, the error of failing to establish the parallel with active manifestation: volition accompanying absorption and the path is also called non-revelation; it merely prevents [wrongdoing] moment by moment without a distinct doubling of essence or function; yet when it comes to accomplishing non-revelatory discipline, that the essence does not double is accepted by self and others alike." If one does not admit that absorption and the path increase in function moment by moment, then subsequent absorption and path would be unable to sever subsequent grades of afflictions. Because this absorption and path do not increase in efficacy and are identical to prior absorption and path, they could not sever subsequent grades of afflictions. If one admits they can sever them, there is the fault of contradicting the inference (anumāna): subsequent absorption and path should not suppress or sever subsequent grades of afflictions; because they lack superior capacity; because their functions are equal; like prior absorption and path. There is complete textual evidence for this, but being too voluminous it cannot be cited, which should be understood by analogy below.
