Question: In the formless realm, there is no sound; upon what does metaphorical cognition arise? Answer: There are three interpretations. First, it is stated according to the majority. Second, there is also sound, spoken in terms of the fruit of meditative concentration. Third, having repeatedly heard sound in the lower two realms previously, through habitual practice, metaphorical cognition also arises. Question: The treatise states that both the signifier (abhidhāna) and the signified (abhidheya) are not individual characteristics. If signifier and signified are both not individual characteristics, they may operate reliant on the common characteristic. As for the cognizing subject (grāhaka) and cognized object (grāhya), it does not say they are not individual characteristics; should they not operate reliant on the common characteristic? Answer: The cognizing metaphorical cognition is also not the individual characteristic; because it possesses conceptual discrimination, it is termed metaphorical cognition. Why is it not mentioned? Answer: Because of an elliptical expression: by mentioning the object, the mind is revealed.
