Regarding the passage in the Treatise from "If there were no this consciousness..." down to "...they would all lack a cause": According to the Mahāyānasaṃgraha, refuting afflictive afflictions comprises three: afflictions, karma, and rebirth. Here it explicitly refutes rebirth and afflictions, and below "conditioned by formations is consciousness" it concurrently refutes the defilement of karma. In this first section it is divided: "If there were no this consciousness to hold the seeds of afflictions," when moving back and forth between realms and stages, the arising of the various afflictions would all lack a cause; this refers to afflictions lacking a cause to arise after minds of the three moral natures. As for the Commentary citing "the initial consciousness defiled," they hold that upon taking rebirth afflictions necessarily arise. Because the initial consciousness that takes rebirth is defiled, this consciousness-link would lack seeds to arise, and therefore afflictions as well as secondary afflictions would all lack a cause. "Those who pass away from stages such as the non-conceptual" includes upper and lower stages, because in the Heaven of Non-conception there are no six consciousnesses for a long time; hence it is stated in an explicit manner.
