Ximing says: "Although there are twenty-five interpretations, the principle is not yet exhausted. In each having a single grade, there should be distinct theories by the two masters of gradual and sudden [severance], making twenty-eight interpretations in all." Now I say: This statement also fails to exhaust the principle. First, Ximing merely heard of the Tripiṭaka Master's earlier twenty-five interpretations and did not hear of the twenty-six interpretations. In each having a single grade, according to Ximing's explanation there are only three explanations, whereas there should be four interpretations, as already clarified above; thus he also lacks one interpretation. Furthermore, in the preceding three-grade and two-grade [theories], after severing afflictions and wishing to sever the cognitive [hindrance], an advanced path should be added. Among the preceding three categories, each lacks one interpretation. One cannot say that within a single true path of seeing one cannot separately generate an advanced path, because the grades and categories of hindrances explained are distinct. Furthermore, most are incorrect, which is why he made this explanation. The Yaoji states: "An explanation says: Twenty-eight interpretations still do not exhaust the principle. In the school of gradual severance of hindrances with each having a single grade, there should be five interpretations: one of three mind-[moments], two of four mind-[moments], one of five mind-[moments], and one of six mind-[moments], adding two to Ximing's. Furthermore, that the path of seeing of three mind-[moments] has only four explanations also does not exhaust the principle; adding three explanations to the preceding: One says that the first two mind-[moments] are the uninterrupted [paths] of two grades, and the third is the path of liberation for the preceding two. Moreover, from the first entering the second, and from the second entering the third, since they are of different kinds, there should be an advanced path; thus this makes seven interpretations. Combining them makes thirty-three, only then exhausting the principle."
