Beyond one hundred years [after the nirvāṇa], inside the Kukkuṭārāma Monastery in the city of Pāṭaliputra—the origin of this city being fully described in the Great Tang Records on the Western Regions and Paramārtha's commentary on the Samayabhedoparacanacakra—on the night of the fifteenth day, Mahādeva recited the Prātimokṣa Sūtra. Having finished reciting the Prātimokṣa Sūtra, he then expounded the five points. The verse says: / Led by others, ignorance, / Doubt, being made to enter by another, / The path arising because of sound: / These are called the true teaching of the Buddha. / None of the venerable and noble ones accepted them; they immediately overturned his statement in the fourth line, saying: / Your words are not the Buddha's teaching. / Because of this, the Hīnayāna divided into two sects. The assembly of noble ones took Mahākāśyapa from the time of the root recitation as their master, calling themselves the Sthaviravāda; Mahādeva's followers took Bāṣpa as their master, calling themselves the Mahāsāṃghika. Later, within two hundred years, the Mahāsāṃghika further divided into nine; within three hundred years, the Sthaviravāda divided into eleven. This is fully explained in the Samayabhedoparacanacakra and the Mañjuśrīparipṛcchā Prajñāpāramitā.
