The Dharmaguptaka school says: 'Three characteristics are conditioned, and the characteristic of cessation is unconditioned. If the characteristic of impermanence were conditioned in essence, its nature would be weak and inferior, and it could not cease dharmas; because it is unconditioned and its nature is powerful, it can cease dharmas.' What the Śramaṇas of the similar continuity say: 'The arising, duration, aging, and impermanence of material dharmas are in essence still matter; and so on up to consciousness dharmas as well.' This meaning is that the four characteristics are not different from matter and so forth; following the essence of the five aggregates, the characteristics are subsumed under them, and are not unassociated formations.
