The Śāstra: "Speaks of citta, manas, and vijñāna." The Sarvāstivādins say: "There are differences in meaning across five gates: first, the gate of names, which merely assigns names; second, the gate of meanings, where accumulating is called citta, discerning is called vijñāna, and cogitating is called manas; third, the gate of activities, where knowing from afar is called citta, initiating and guiding is called manas, and taking rebirth is called vijñāna; fourth, the gate of time periods, where the past is called manas, the present is called citta, and the future is called vijñāna; fifth, the gate of designation, where in the aggregates it is called vijñāna, in the bases (āyatana) it is called manas, and in the elements (dhātu) it is called citta. All of these are common to the six consciousnesses; there are no citta and manas separate from and outside of the six." When examining the texts and commentaries later, the Mahāyāna is different.
