Regarding the Śāstra's statement: "because the sixth consciousnesses of the three realms and nine grounds mutually induce one another": Question: Altogether how many minds are there? From which desire-realm mind does which desire-realm mind arise? The questions regarding the minds arising in the upper two realms and unconditioned (unbound) minds are also like this. Answer: According to the eighteenth fascicle of the Prakaraṇārya-śāsana, there are eight minds bound to the desire realm: 1. innately acquired wholesome (upapattilābhika-kuśala); 2. expedient wholesome (prayogika-kuśala); 3. unwholesome (akuśala); 4. defiled neutral (nivṛtāvyākṛta); and undefiled neutral (anivṛtāvyākṛta), divided into four types: maturation (vipāka), deportment (īryāpatha), craftsmanship (śilpasthāna), and transformation (nirmāṇa) minds. There are six minds bound to the form realm, excluding unwholesome and craftsmanship. There are four bound to the formless realm, excluding unwholesome, deportment, craftsmanship, and transformation minds. There are two unbound minds, namely śaikṣa and aśaikṣa. In total there are twenty minds. However, speaking generally: the desire [realm] gives rise to [minds of] all three realms; the form [realm] gives rise to two realms; the formless [realm] gives rise to the formless; and each gives rise to unbound [minds]. Furthermore, the desire realm of itself lacks a transformation mind; it is spoken of by similarity, but in reality it belongs to the upper realm. Hence fascicle sixty-nine states: "Like the desire-realm transformation mind which is a fruit of the form realm, immediately after the wholesome mind of the form realm, this neutral mind of the desire realm [arises]." Moreover, as for calling this mind "desire realm", one should know that it is of the category of an image thereof, not its intrinsic nature. According to this, in reality the desire realm has seven minds, excluding the transformation mind, because it is not bound to the desire realm. As for their arising mutually in immediate succession, stating it briefly in terms of the desire realm, the verse says:
