If so, and bodhisattvas are the same as the two vehicles, why are they called "excellent"? Answer: For now, in contrast to those without gotra, they are collectively called "excellent"; it is not solely by being distinguished from the small [vehicle] that they obtain the name "excellent". If one does not accept that the small [vehicle] is also called "excellent", it contradicts fascicle 21, which says: "Such seeds do not have distinct characteristics in the six āyatanas; within the excellence of the six āyatanas in such categories and stages, they are handed down successively from beginningless time and acquired naturally." Moreover, from this passage, "six āyatanas" refers solely to the six internal āyatanas, not to the stages of fruition and so forth.
