The explanation says: It manifests that doing good or bad leads to rebirth in higher or lower destinies; hence the cold tactile sensation differs as to upper or lower. Question: The Yogācārabhūmi says: 'The place where consciousness first alights is called the complete heart, and life is abandoned last of all from this very place.' Why then does it differ? Answer: There are two explanations: First, it is said that the external sign of the cold tactile sensation differs as to upper and lower, whereas consciousness is abandoned all at once from the heart, together with its upper and lower [parts]. Second, it is said that for those who do good, it is abandoned gradually from below up to the receptacle of the complete heart, and afterwards abandoned from above; for those who do evil, it is the reverse of good. Thus the complete heart is indeed abandoned last. Upper and lower refer to those signs preceding the abandonment of life; thus in principle there is no contradiction.
