4.689

論：或於今世依變化身，先修苦行。後捨彼行，修處中行，方得菩提。有契經說：如來先世迦葉佛時，作是罵言：何處沙門剃鬚髮者有大菩提，無上菩提極難得故。由彼惡業，今受如是難行苦果。

Treatise: 'Or in this life, based on the transformation body, he first practices austerities; later he abandons those practices and cultivates the middle path, and only then attains bodhi. A sūtra says: In a previous life at the time of Kāśyapa Buddha, the Tathāgata spoke this revilement: "Where does a shaven-headed renunciant have great bodhi? For supreme bodhi is extremely difficult to attain." Due to that evil karma, he now experiences such bitter results of difficult practices.'
