Answer: Fascicle 9 of the Abhidharmasamuccaya-bhāṣya states: The path of preparation means the path through which one is able to abandon afflictions. Why is this? Because when properly cultivating such a path, one can gradually abandon the crude weightiness generated by the respective upper grades of afflictions and so on, and gradually obtain a portion of the transformation of the basis. The uninterrupted path means the path through which one uninterruptedly and permanently severs afflictions, leaving no remainder. Why is this? Because through this path, one uninterruptedly permanently eliminates the crude weightiness generated by this grade of affliction, leaving no remainder; also, having transformed crude weightiness, one relies on obtaining that which is free of crude weightiness. The path of liberation means the path through which one realizes the liberation obtained from severing afflictions. Why is this? Because through this path one can realize the transformation of the basis obtained from the permanent severing of afflictions. The path of excellence means the paths of preparation, non-interruption, and liberation for the severing of the remaining grades of afflictions; this is called excellence. Why is this? Because the preparation, non-interruption, and liberation for severing the other afflictions subsequent to this grade are superior relative to this grade, it is called the path of excellence.
