The Commentary says: From here below is the second part, where the treatise master directly refutes them, comprising five verses in total, in which there are three parts: the first single verse refutes both Hīnayāna and non-Buddhist systems together; the next three verses directly refute Hīnayāna; the final verse directly refutes non-Buddhists while hypothetically refuting Hīnayāna. This is the first verse. Within the first verse, the first line refutes non-Buddhists; the lower three lines refute Hīnayāna. Within the refutation of Hīnayāna, the first line refutes the ancient Sarvāstivāda-Vaibhāṣikas; the lower two lines refute the Sautrāntikas and the Neo-Sarvāstivāda Nyāyānusāra masters. 'Nor again a combination and so forth' establishes the pratijñā; 'because paramāṇus are not established' establishes the hetu. Verifying this, it also refutes the aggregation of paramāṇus. When composing this Viṃśikā śāstra, Vasubandhu was advanced in age; it was only composed after the Nyāyānusāra, as should be understood below.
