Question: "When the reason is absent in the thesis, or the example is absent in both, they are given the name 'unestablished'. Why is it that when the thesis is absent in the reason and example, or the reason is absent in the two examples, they are not named 'unestablished'?" Answer: "Establishing another is called 'establishing' (sādhana), and its reversal is called 'unestablished' (asiddha). The reason originally establishes the thesis, not the two examples; the example establishes the thesis and the reason, not the thesis establishing the two. Because what is originally established differs, their reversals are named 'unestablished'. Other than this, it is not so, and they are not named 'unestablished'."
