Question: "The Nyāyamukha states, 'It is solely by means of a property that one establishes that property.' Why do you now say that a reason establishes four things?" Answer: "In reality, it only establishes a property. For instance, when refuting existence as non-existence, one refutes his intended existence apart from substances and the like as non-existence; hence it only establishes a property. Although it refutes what is intended, following the words it immediately refutes it without adding further words; hence it is called contradiction of the subject's svabhāva; if words were added, it would become refuting his viśeṣa. Now, looking from the perspective of what is explicitly stated, the reason establishes four [aspects of] the thesis. The Nyāyamukha looks from the perspective of disputing the intended distinct meaning upon the subject, and therefore states that it is solely by a property that one establishes that property; the principle is not contradictory."
