問前下，二、料揀前後，二：初、辨異二義。問意可知。答中前約等者，意明前之二相與此二鏡法體無二，為門有殊。謂前二相以智為門，故云俱就始覺說；後二鏡以理為門，故云俱就法體說。又前約相說，故云生二種相；此約性說，故二種俱言法。又前約對染明淨相，故云智淨等；此約自性顯大義，故云有四種大義與虛空等也。又前以顯為門，此以隱為門。所以有斯二說者，恐有人言：顯時方淨，隱時不淨。故因說二隱，又重說二顯，故有法出離緣熏習。又先明二顯者，以取始覺之末文便故。又亦即是始覺義故，亦即隱處難信，且就顯處而開示故。餘義易知。

The Commentary: "Question: Previously..." and below is the second, distinguishing the preceding and following, which has two [parts]: first, distinguishing the differences between the two meanings. The intent of the question can be known. In the answer: "Previously in terms of..." and so forth intends to clarify that the previous two marks and these two mirrors are not two in the essence of the dharma, but the approaches are different. That is, the previous two marks take wisdom as the approach, hence it says they are both spoken of with respect to actualized enlightenment; the latter two mirrors take principle as the approach, hence it says they are both spoken of with respect to the essence of the dharma. Also, previously they were spoken of in terms of marks, hence it says "producing two kinds of marks"; here they are spoken of in terms of nature, hence both kinds are called "dharmas." Also, previously they clarified the marks of purity in contrast to defilement, hence saying "wisdom purity" and so forth; here they reveal the great meaning in terms of self-nature, hence saying "there are four kinds of great meanings equal to empty space" and so forth. Furthermore, previously the revealed was taken as the approach, whereas here the concealed is taken as the approach. The reason why there are these two explanations is for fear that someone might say: it is pure only when revealed, and impure when concealed. Therefore, because of explaining the two concealed ones, it also reiterates the two revealed ones; hence there are the dharma's emergence and perfuming through conditions. Also, explaining the two revealed ones first is because it borrows the convenience of the final text of actualized enlightenment; also because it is precisely the meaning of actualized enlightenment; and also because the concealed aspect is difficult to believe, it first discloses it in terms of the revealed aspect. The remaining meanings are easy to understand.
