11.63

論　住持下，二、別顯功能，二：一、能起潤惑。住持等者，住謂留住，持謂任持，謂留住任持，令業不失也。疏　以此等者，謂過去無明所發業行種子未成熟者，以有此識，發愛取煩惱潤之，使令成熟，堪為來世感果之有，有即業種變異也。若無下，如植種於土，無水則焦；結業待果，無貪則敗。經云：愛水由潤業故。又復等者，謂潤已熟業令受果報，善惡樂苦自然相應，不相違反。如印印物，故曰無差。又現在即現報，未來即生、後二報。如是下，通釋前段，以結其名。斯則潤過去未熟業，令成現在已熟業；潤現在已熟業，令招未來果報。如是循環，無有斷絕，由不斷絕，故名相續。然其潤業等即是令他相續義也。

The treatise says: "Sustaining..." below: 2. Distinctly revealing its function, which has two parts: 1. Being able to give rise to afflictions that moisturize. "Sustaining..." etc.: "sustaining" means retaining; "holding" means maintaining; it means retaining and maintaining so that karma is not lost. The Commentary says: "Because of this..." etc. means that with respect to unripened seeds of karma and action generated by past ignorance, because of this consciousness, the afflictions of craving and grasping are aroused to moisturize them, causing them to ripen, becoming capable of constituting the "existence" (bhava) that experiences retribution in future lives; "existence" is the maturation of karmic seeds. "If there is no..." below: just as planting seeds in soil will cause them to wither without water, when accumulated karma awaits its fruit, without craving it will be ruined. A sūtra says: "The water of craving moisturizes karma." "Furthermore..." etc. means moisturizing already ripened karma to cause it to receive its retribution; wholesome and unwholesome, pleasure and pain naturally correspond without discrepancy. Like a seal stamping an object, it is said to be "without deviation." Furthermore, the present means retribution in the present life; the future means the two retributions of the next life and subsequent lives. "In this way..." below universally explains the preceding section to conclude with its name. Thus it moisturizes past unripened karma, causing it to become present ripened karma; it moisturizes present ripened karma, causing it to incur future retributions. Cycling in this way without interruption, because it is uninterrupted, it is called "continuing." However, its moisturizing of karma and so forth is precisely the meaning of causing others to continue.
