"Thereupon, the Prince took hold of a tree branch and saw plowers turning up the soil, bringing out insects, and crows following behind to peck at and swallow them. Pained with grief for sentient beings, like fish gnawing on each other's scales, [he saw that] the merciless cause ever greater harm, and upon dying fall into the evil destinies, finding escape exceedingly difficult. Although the devas enjoy bliss, it too is impermanent: when merit is exhausted they feel dread, and when retribution arrives they are terrified; misfortune and fortune follow one another, and their saṃsāra is exceedingly long. Observing the human world up to the twenty-eighth heaven, though one's nobility may be supreme, if one lacks the Way, one stands face to face with the gates of hell. In the three evil destinies, the bitter pain is of a hundred kinds; joy and pleasure are momentary, but anxiety and dread are prolonged. Between heaven and earth, there is nothing admirable; I can no longer be deluded by desire."
