1.31

"He immediately rose, mounted his horse, and led Chandaka forward for several tens of li. Suddenly he saw the great spirit presiding over the five destinies, named Benzhi, who was the most singularly unyielding and mighty. In his left hand he held a bow, in his right he grasped an arrow, and at his waist he wore a sharp sword. He resided at the crossroad of the three paths: the first was called the deva path, the second the human path, and the third the three evil paths. This is the place through which the souls and spirits of the dead must pass. When the Prince arrived, he asked: 'Which path is to be followed?' Benzhi, terrified and trembling, cast down his bow, dropped his arrows, unbuckled his sword, stepped back, and pointed to the deva path, saying: 'This is the path to follow.'"
