Next is discussing them in terms of physical sex. Physical sex refers to male, female, sexless, and so forth. In the Abhidharma, the prātimokṣa precepts arise only in a single sex, male or female; because others lack complete aspiration, restraint does not arise. Possession, however, is not like this: except for hermaphrodites, all others possess them. According to the Tattvasiddhi, the monastic precepts are the same as in the Abhidharma. As for the householder precepts, except for hermaphrodites, all other [sexes] both give rise to and possess them. The Mahāyāna precepts do not exclude hermaphrodites; in all bodies they both arise and are possessed, because what is received is comprehensive. Next is discussing the dhyāna precepts and untainted precepts. In the Hīnayāna Dharma, those in the desire realm arise in male and female bodies, and are possessed in all physical sexes, for the sūtras and treatises never speak of hermaphrodites and the like relinquishing these precepts. As for those in the upper realms, they are able to arise and be possessed in bodies that are neither male nor female. For bodhisattvas, they both arise and are possessed in all physical sexes. The distinctions of physical sex are like this (this concludes the sixth gate).
