Next, we elucidate the five fruitions with respect to defiled causes. Among the defiled causes, also excluding the contrary [cause], the remaining nine causes can obtain four fruitions, excluding the fruition of liberation. The conventional cause obtains the sovereign fruition. The cause through existence can generate four fruitions: with ignorance obtaining volitional formations and so forth, the preceding giving rise to the succeeding obtains the dependent fruition; because there exist defilements and karma that can generate subsequent fruitions, there is the retributive fruition; because there are sentient beings creating various karmic actions that accomplish what is done, this is named the virile fruition; because there exist the six faculties generating the six consciousnesses and so forth, this is named the sovereign fruition. The planting cause can generate three fruitions: taking separately defilements and karma being able to generate subsequent retribution obtains the retributive fruition; taking separately external conditions gathering to generate subsequent retribution is named the sovereign fruition; due to the body creating causes and experiencing future retribution, this is the virile fruition. Furthermore, approaching evil friends, giving rise to karmic afflictions, and ultimately obtaining future retribution is the evil friends' virile fruition. However, the planting cause is called planting in view of future fruitions; since they generate of a different kind, it lacks the dependent fruition. The generating cause and own-seed [cause] can generate the retributive fruition. Within the embracing cause, there are two fruitions: with those external conditions gathering to generate subsequent retribution, this is the sovereign fruition; within the embracing cause, approaching evil friends gathering and giving rise to defilements and karma that can generate subsequent retribution is the evil friends' virile fruition. Within the growing cause, there are two fruitions: from cause growing until fruitions are generated is the retributive fruition; causes gradually increasing and fruitions naturally growing—such a growing cause can generate the dependent fruition. The cause of common purpose can generate four fruitions, not differing from [the causes] from existence down to own-seed. The contrary cause, in view of its destroying those phenomena, acts as the sovereign fruition. Because it is not untainted, it lacks the fruition of liberation. (This concludes the third section.)
