Next, showing their basis of reliance in comparison to the ten latent proclivities. As the *Saṃyuktābhidharmahṛdaya* says: the two stains of harm and enmity arise based on anger. Due to the latent proclivity of anger, one wishes to harm another; also due to anger, one harbors hatred without letting go. The two stains of deception and haughtiness arise from greedy desire. Due to the latent proclivity of greed, one deceives the person before them to obtain their wealth and profit; also due to greed, having obtained profit one exalts oneself; also due to greed, loving and clinging to one's own body, one gives rise to a haughty mind. The stain of flattery arises based on the five views, because anyone who is not clever cannot flatter. The stain of anguish arises based on the attachment to views (dṛṣṭi-parāmarśa), because a person attached to views takes what is inferior to be superior; seeking superiority and failing to obtain it, anguish then arises. Hence the *Saṃyuktābhidharmahṛdaya* says: 'Harm and enmity depend on anger; deception and haughtiness depend on greedy desire. The five false views: it is upon these that the arising of flattery depends. It is said that depending on the fruition of attachment to views, that is anguish, as should be known.' (This completes the third gate.)
