Answer: Although the words of both men are equally exhausted, their exhaustion has a source. It is truly because Nāgārjuna examined right and wrong that the outsider incurred defeat, and the outsider's words were thus exhausted. The outsider's words having been exhausted, Nāgārjuna's words were also exhausted. The exhaustion of both men's words is due to Nāgārjuna; therefore it is called Nāgārjuna's treatise. To give an analogy: it is like two men wrestling. Although both fall down together, there is victory and defeat: the one underneath is the defeated, and the one on top is the victor. Nāgārjuna and the outsider are also like this: although both ceased speaking, Nāgārjuna is the victor and the outsider is the defeated; therefore it is called Nāgārjuna's treatise.
