Question: Why does this sūtra clarify the two truths as perspective and teaching? Explanation: It is to answer the doubt of Mañjuśrī and the great assembly. They supposed there is only one truth, and specifically raised the objection that there are not two truths. For this reason, the Buddha set forth the two truths as perspective and teaching to answer them, clarifying that through skillful means, in accordance with sentient beings, two truths are taught. Why would there not be two truths? Next it says: "What worldly people know is called conventional truth; what people beyond the world know is called ultimate truth." Why would there not be two truths? The former, teaching in accordance with sentient beings, is the two truths as teaching; the worldly and transworldly persons' knowing is the two truths from perspective. To resolve the doubt that there are not two truths, he therefore clarified the two kinds of two truths: perspective and teaching.
