Master Zhi Faling's distant venture was indeed a bridge across a thousand years. Returning from the Western Regions, he obtained more than two hundred texts of new vaipulya scriptures, and invited one Mahāyāna meditation master, one Tripiṭaka master, and two Vibhāṣā masters. Master Kumārajīva at Dashi Temple translated the newly arrived scriptures; the repository of the Dharma was profound and vast, and extraordinary teachings were heard daily. The meditation master at Waguan Temple taught and practiced the way of dhyāna; his disciples numbered several hundred, unflagging day and night, harmonious and reverent, truly a matter of great joy. The Tripiṭaka master at Zhong Temple translated the Vinaya-piṭaka, its fundamentals and details so refined and thorough as if one were witnessing the Buddha's initial institution of the precepts. The Vibhāṣā masters at Shiyang Temple translated the Śāriputrābhidharma; although the foreign text has not yet been fully translated, when questioned about its internal contents, their remarks were fresh and marvelous.
