The Commentary states: "The debater claims that if one exhausts emptiness and fully comprehends phenomena, being marvelously consummated and silently matching [reality], then the designations of stillness and illumination are merely the substances of samādhi and wisdom; but if the mental substance is spontaneous, empty, tranquil, and senses [things] in isolation, then its responsiveness to the myriad phenomena must have nearly ceased." (The above raises the objection; the following brings out its meaning.) This means: being marvelously consummated and silently matching [reality] cannot be designated as samādhi and wisdom, and being empty, tranquil, and sensing [things] in isolation cannot be spoken of as the cessation [of responding to] the myriad phenomena.
