Affectionate speech of all kinds is, in brief, of three types: (1) speaking words of consolation: always facing sentient beings free from frowning, speaking good words first, with a relaxed countenance and a level gaze, preceded by a smile, either inquiring after their peace and auspiciousness, or inquiring after the balance of their elements, or inquiring after their pleasant ease day and night, or inviting them to step forward and welcoming them warmly, consoling sentient beings with such expressions; (2) speaking words of congratulation and delight: by means of such speech, if one sees that a sentient being's wife, children, wealth, or grain are flourishing, yet they are unaware of it, one awakens them as appropriate to express congratulation and delight, or upon knowing that their faith, śīla, learning, relinquishment, or prajñā has increased, one likewise congratulates them; (3) speaking words of supreme benefit: proclaiming speech corresponding to the Dharma teachings replete with all kinds of virtues, benefiting and bringing peace and happiness to all sentient beings, constantly presenting them with words of supreme benefit so as to bring them benefit.
