Difficult-to-practice affectionate speech is, in brief, of three types: (1) toward an enemy or bad friend who is capable of killing or harming, with a wholesome and pure mind free from defilement, thoughtfully speaking the preceding three kinds of speech for them—this is called the first difficulty; (2) toward sentient beings of the highest degree of foolishness and dull faculties, with a mind free from doubt or hesitation, thoughtfully expounding various Dharma teachings for them, vowing to endure weariness and fatigue, grasping them in accordance with reason, in accordance with the Dharma, and with goodness—this is called the second difficulty; (3) toward sentient beings who deceive and defraud their upādhyāyas, ācāryas, venerables, and elders who are genuine fields of merit, and who practice evil conduct, having no thoughts of resentment and no thoughts of enmity or annoyance, thoughtfully speaking the preceding three kinds of speech for them—this is called the third difficulty.
