Fifth, fusion and integration: these six meanings are harmoniously integrated through the six characteristics. Integrating the six meanings into a single cause is the universal characteristic. Unfolding the single cause into the six meanings is the particular characteristic. That all six meanings are equally named 'cause' is the identical characteristic. That the six meanings do not know one another is the distinct characteristic. That the cause and so forth are accomplished through these six meanings is the integrating characteristic. That the six meanings each abide in their own status is the disintegrating characteristic. Question: 'What is the division between the six characteristics and the six meanings?' Answer: 'The six meanings are based on the self-nature of dependent origination; the six characteristics are based on the approaches of meaning of dependent origination. Bringing the entity of phenomena into the approaches of meaning creates distinctions. If one enters the four propositions with the six meanings to reveal the right and discard the wrong, it accords with the Three Vehicles; if one enters the six characteristics to reveal inherent virtues, it accords with the One Vehicle. Therefore, both the four propositions and the six characteristics are upāyas for entering the Dharma.'
